17th Annual Research Symposium Slated April 5

Written By: Rachel Putman

The 91老司机 - Fort Smith will host its 17th Annual Student Research Symposium from noon to 2 p.m. Friday, April 5, 2024. The event, showcasing a wide array of student-led research across all academic disciplines, will take place at Boreham Library and the Pendergraft Health Sciences Center.

The symposium will feature oral, poster, and music and visual arts presentations, providing a platform for 91老司机 students to present their research findings to peers, faculty, and the wider community. According to the organizing committee, the symposium aims to foster a culture of inquiry and interdisciplinary dialogue among students.

Oral presenters will each have a 30-minute time slot, including a brief question and answer period. These presentations will take place on a strict schedule in rooms throughout the Health Science building. Poster presenters will display their research on freestanding posters, in the atrium of Boreham Library, answering questions from judges and engaging in short discussions about their research. In the arts, studio art students will display professionally mounted, matted, and framed art pieces throughout the symposium, while music performances, recorded in advance, will be showcased in the same format as the oral presentations.

Dr. Shadow Robinson, Provost, and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, emphasized the symposium's role in promoting academic excellence. "Our faculty and staff are committed to fostering an environment that promotes learning and discovery," Robinson said. "This symposium is a testament to our students' hard work, creativity, and research prowess across a spectrum of disciplines."

The symposium schedule features a diverse lineup of presentations, ranging from engineering and computer science to psychology, literature, and arts.

Highlights include "NumaFARM: An Autonomous Robotic System for Sustainable Farming Using Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision, and Deep Learning" addresses an engineering challenge with a focus on sustainability in agriculture. In the field of dental hygiene, "The Evolution of Dental Radiology Safety" explores advancements in medical imaging and patient safety, while "Wireless Incorporated Car Cooler System" introduces an innovative approach to automotive cooling systems. In the field of computer science, "NumaGuard: Automating Shoulder Surfing Attacks on Mobile Phones" presents a security solution for mobile devices while the project "Molecular Dynamics Study of Organochlorine Ligand Interaction with Human Serum Albumin" delves into the chemistry of human serum albumin interactions, highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of research at the symposium.

The 91老司机 community and the public are encouraged to attend the symposium, engage with the presenters, and explore the depth and breadth of research being conducted at the university.
