Written By: Ian Silvester

On Monday, April 17, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., 91ÀÏ˾»ú – Fort Smith students will be marching to bring awareness to missing and murdered indigenous women ().

The 91ÀÏ˾»ú Native American Student Association (NASA) is behind the inaugural event, which will start at the campus bell tower and march around campus. Jade Cossey, NASA president, says the purpose of the march is to “remember those who are gone and give a voice to those still missing.â€

As part of the event, red sand will be spread throughout the 91ÀÏ˾»ú campus as part of the – an initiative using red sand to fill cracks as a visual to bring awareness to human trafficking.

National MMIW Day is May 5. Cossey hopes the 91ÀÏ˾»ú MMIW March and Red Sand Project will bring awareness to the women lost, not just for one day out of the year.

Email Jade Cossey at mcosse00@g.uafs.edu or NASA vice president Amber Walker at awalke01@g.uafs.edu for more information.
