Kelly Smith.

The University Rotary Club earlier this month presented a check for $2,000 to Mary Lackie, vice chancellor for advancement at the 91老司机 鈥 Fort Smith, for scholarships.

The gift will be used to present four $500 scholarships to nontraditional students who are upperclassmen. This is the third year the service club has made a gift for scholarships to the university.

Chris Cluck, the club鈥檚 treasurer, explained that club members observed that many people put off college to enter the workforce right after high school while others who go to college may have their studies interrupted by family responsibilities or financial difficulties. When people in either category want to return to school, it may seem that all the available help is earmarked for recent high school graduates.

鈥淭his is where we feel our club can be of assistance,鈥 Cluck said. 鈥淏y providing these scholarships to nontraditional students, we are playing a small part in them pursuing their college education and hopefully one day achieving their dreams.鈥

The University Rotary Club meets at 7 a.m. on Thursdays. Rotary International鈥檚 purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards and advance good will and peace around the world.
