The Arkansas Council of Teachers and Mathematics held a regional mathematics contest March 1 on the 91老司机 - Fort Smith campus that saw 18 students from local junior and senior high schools receive awards in a variety of categories.

Students competed in six different categories spanning different branches of mathematics, according to Dr. J.C. Price of Fort Smith, assistant professor of mathematics at 91老司机.

More than 540 students competed this year from 11 local schools. 91老司机 is one of several higher education institutions in Arkansas which hosts the regional competition, and winners at the 91老司机 event go to the ACTM state contest on April 26.

Winners included:

Statistics: Field Watts, Southside High School, first place; Macklin Jenkins Joyce, Southside High School, second place; Baker Jones, Southside High School, third place.

Calculus: Blake Larkin, Southside High School, first place; Jacob Schwartz, Southside High School, second place; Arman Hemmati, Southside High School, third place; Jaeyong Oh of Subiaco Academy and David Wiggins of Southside High School, honorable mention.

Precalculus and Trigonometry: Jacob F. Maestri, Subiaco Academy, first place; Brayley Gattis, Southside High School, second place; Eli LaSalle, Greenwood High School, third place.

Algebra II: Gavin Clark, Southside High School, first place; Angel Yang of Southside High School and Dillon Trinh of Southside High School, second place.

Algebra I: Andrew Kutchka, Trinity Junior High, first place; Diego Calvillo, Trinity Junior High, second place; Kenneth Tai Pham, Chaffin Junior High, third place.

Geometry: Sangwoon Lee, Subiaco Academy, first place; Axel Ntamatungiro, Subiaco Academy, second place; Huy Mai, Ramsey Junior High, third place.

Competing at 91老司机 were students from Chaffin Junior High, Kimmons Junior High, Ramsey Junior High, Trinity Junior High, Charleston High School, Greenwood High School, Hackett High School, Northside High School, Subiaco Academy, Southside High School, Van Buren High School and 91老司机 Upper Bound.

The mathematics competitions are sponsored by the Arkansas Council of Teachers and Mathematics, whose purpose is to encourage an active interest in mathematics and improve teaching of mathematics.
