The 91老司机 - Fort Smith Jazz Band and Jazz Catz will perform in concert Nov. 19 as part of the 91老司机 Season of Entertainment 33.

The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Arkansas Best Performing Arts Center at the Fort Smith Convention Center, 55 S. 7th St. Admission is by Season 33 ticket, or individual tickets are $8.

Directing the Jazz Band is Dr. Matt Vangjel of Fort Smith, 91老司机 assistant professor of music (high brass). Don Bailey of Fort Smith, 91老司机 director of jazz studies, directs the Jazz Catz vocal ensemble.

According to Vangjel, the Jazz Band is 鈥渕ixing things up a bit鈥 this semester by performing some new arrangements of old standards.

鈥淚t is important to pay homage to the great jazz musicians throughout history, and we are certainly honoring the big band genre,鈥 he said.

Selections by the Jazz Band include favorites like 鈥淢ack the Knife,鈥 鈥淭he Girl From Ipanema,鈥 鈥淢ood Indigo,鈥 鈥淐ousin Mary鈥 and 鈥淪t. Louis Blues.鈥

鈥淲ith selections from W.C. Handy to Freddie Hubbard to Antonio Carlos Jobim, there will be something for everyone at this concert,鈥 he added.

Bailey said the Jazz Catz will sing selections that span more than 80 years of recorded music, in styles made famous by artists like Duke Ellington, Michael Buble, Henry Mancini, Johnny Mercer, Icelandic composer Bjork, English pop-rock composer Imogen Heap, Brazilian guitarist Luiz Bonfa, The Boswell Sisters and Billy Joel.

鈥淭he Jazz Catz and Jazz Band always give an exciting performance when they share the stage,鈥 said Bailey. 鈥淭hey have built a tradition of providing high-quality shows that are always entertaining and filled with a lot of variety, great solo work and high-voltage jazz arrangements.鈥

Vocal selections to be performed by the Catz include 鈥淚t Don鈥檛 Mean a Thing (If It Ain鈥檛 Got That Swing),鈥 the 1918 hit song 鈥淎fter You鈥檝e Gone,鈥 鈥淚鈥檝e Never Been in Love Before鈥 from Broadway鈥檚 Guys and Dolls, Buble鈥檚 鈥淚t Had Better Be Tonight,鈥 the Brazilian street dance tune 鈥淟ua Soberana鈥 and 鈥淎ha!鈥 composed by Heap.

鈥淭he jazz concerts generally sell out early,鈥 Bailey added, 鈥渟o everyone should get their tickets before it鈥檚 too late.鈥
